If your skin turns pale and becomes numb, frostbite is a real possibility. Head home right away and get an adult to check you out.

Frostbite is when skin and the tissue under it freeze.

Remember when we were in a sandstorm in the Middle East? Blowing sand feels like little bits of stinging rock when it hits your skin. We couldn’t breathe well, and we couldn’t see very far, either.

A sandstorm can come up in seconds. A huge dark cloud of dust and debris will suddenly sweep across the land, blotting out the sun. Here’s what you can do to survive:

1. Branches and all kinds of things will sail through the air and could hurt you. If you are in a car, tell whoever is driving to pull off the road. Stay in the car!

2. If you’re outside and in a group, stay together. If possible, try to get to higher ground. Most blowing sand stays lower down.

3. If you can’t find shelter, look for a boulder or other large object to crouch behind. If there’s nothing nearby, lie down to avoid being hit with flying objects.

4. Protect your eyes, nose, and mouth with anything you have, like a backpack or sweatshirt. We protected our faces with cloths. You can also use your hands.
